Why Green Hospitals?

If the world's healthcare sector were a country, it would be the fifth-largest emitter of carbon emissions on the planet.

Climate change is a public health issue. Medical professionals have recognised climate change from carbon emissions as the ‘biggest global health threat of the 21st century¹. Between 2030 and 2050, climate change is expected to cause more than 250,000 additional deaths per year. 

As the impacts of climate change upon the environment and society become ever clearer, the healthcare sector needs to urgently recognise the opportunity it has to lead the way in tackling this global crisis. Across the world, healthcare professionals are at the forefront of the fight against climate change and are driving innovations to invent the 'green hospital' of the future. 

Resiliency, low energy consumption, healing environments: the field of possibilities is wide. Together, the International Hospital Federation and Dialog Health have identified innovative practices from around the world and invited the experts leading these initiatives to share their insights and experiences to help you determine your next steps on the climate change agenda. Participation and innovation are key features of sustainable hospitals and will be facilitated by bringing together the participants and encouraging them to share their resources and best practices.

"With the new Ashikaga Red Cross Hospital, I wanted to build a next-generation hospital that would meet the needs of tomorrow. That is why 16 years ago, I proposed that our hospital should be eco-conscious. I wanted to create a hospital that would be beautiful and that would organically integrate all the features to meet the challenges of the future."
